Global production of e-waste has been massively increasing from 44 metric tons in 2014 to an estimated 75 metric tons in 2030. E-waste largely correlates to an economy’s GDP, with production taking off with economic development. Only 20 percent of e-waste globally is adequately collected and recycled, with Europe leading the way.

Statistics come from The Global E-Waste Monitor via Geneva Environment Network and NCS internal data.

In 2020, North America produced 7.7 metric tons of e-waste, the third most e-waste produced behind Europe and Asia. More importantly, North America produces 20.9 kilograms of e-waste per capita, and only 15 percent of e-waste in North America is properly recycled.

Compared to other continents, North America ranks first in per capita e-waste production and third in total e-waste production, behind Asia and Europe. Most importantly, North America ranks second in properly collecting and recycling e-waste, behind Europe’s 43 percent and ahead of Asia’s 12 percent.
